After first opening several large cans of chili to set simmering on the stove for her crew’s lunch, Kila headed for the barn to find Blake. Working cell phones would sure be handy on a ranch.

Finding Blake proved easy. A large pile of new, over-sized, four-stringer hay bales stacked by the corral gave testimony to their early delivery. Murphy stood on top of the pile like a sentinel.

The loud sputtering and choking of the ancient tractor announced its arrival before it came around the barn.

Blake smiled when he saw Kila. He drove the tractor up to the hay, used the grappling arms on it to grab a bale, and signaled Kila to open the gate.

Kila smiled back and ran to swing the gate wide open. The heifers crowded against the corral’s back fencing, but seemed calm.

Blake drove through the gate towards the loader. With the bale still suspended, he jumped off the tractor, ran under the bale, reached up with a long knife and sliced at the twine binding the hay.

"NO! STOP!" Kila screamed.

Murphy leaped down; hair up, nostrils flared and teeth bared.
